Canada Regulates Immigration Representatives
On April 13, 2004, the Canadian Government implemented regulations of qualification and activities of individuals who offer immigration related services.
The Regulations restrict Legal Representatives (those who may represent, advise or consult with persons subject to immigration proceedings or those making immigration applications), to members of a Canadian Law Society, members of the Chambre des Notaires du Quebec and members of CSIC.
Created in the fall of 2003, CSIC (Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants) is responsible for regulating immigration consultants who are members and who provide immigration advice for a fee. The Society grants memberships to only those individuals who have demonstrated their knowledge and ability to advise, consult and represent people who wish to seek Canadian immigration and have met the requirements of membership. To ensure the competent and professional conduct of its members, CSIC has also developed a strict code of conduct with its Rules of Professional Conduct by which all its members must abide. As an independent organization, CSIC operates at arms length from the Government.
